When I started my business  in Charlotte,  I was very disheartened about how hard it was to gain access to anything in this city related to helping a small business grow. I was an outsider, I did not have any business contacts. It was hard. Very hard.  Charlotte is a “pay to play” city. Every networking event costs money. Every organization required large membership fees. It was not “start up friendly.” I hated living here and hated even more that I started a company here. The startup community has changed, and things have gotten 1000% better than 2001. But its still not where it needs to be.

I am a lifestyle entrepreneur, not unlike any owner of a dry cleaner, or a small marketing agency, or a restaurant. We get overlooked. No one cares about us or our companies. It feels like if you are not a high growth tech company or trying to raise millions of dollars, with exception to trying to charge us for services or membership fees, no one wants us.  Just because lifestyle entrepreneurs are not seeking investment capital, does not mean we should be left to fend for ourselves. I see this blog as a way to fill a need for entrepreneurs like me to get valuable content and access to advisors they cant find anywhere else. We need somewhere to go to learn.

As for “ the why”, I love the teaching and mentoring aspect of entrepreneurship,  I’ve been doing it since 2004, and it’s the best part of my “job”. I guess it’s my midlife crisis kicking in these days, but I want to leave a mark, and I feel like this is an opportunity to do something great.

Someone once told me, in your 20’s and 30’s, you do what you have to do, in your 40’s and 50’s you should do what you want to do. I’ve been saving up “political capital” for something great. I’m ready to spend it!!
